FAQ

Answers to your top questions about choosing fiber-optic internet

What can I do with fiber-optic internet?

Generally, fiber-optic connections support higher bandwidth Internet offerings that enable:

  • Working or schooling at home
  • Facetime, Skype and Zoom calls
  • Streaming hi-definition video and music
  • Gaming (online multi-player gaming) with multiple devices

How many people can be online at the same time?

High-speed fiber offerings are great in households where several people are taking classes, gaming, streaming movies, video chatting and working all at the same time. That’s because fiber supports high speed, higher bandwidth service offerings, increasing the amount of data that your home network can send and receive at one time.

According to the FCC Broadband Speed Guide, here’s the minimum bandwidth you’ll need in Mbps, megabits per second, for popular applications:

  • Video conferencing: HD requires 6 Mbps
  • Downloading large files: Can require up to 10 Mbps
  • Streaming in HD: Requires 5-8 Mbps
  • Multi-player gaming: Requires 4 Mbps. Connecting a game console to the internet takes 3 Mbps

How is fiber different from cable?

Fiber uses light to send data. Cable uses electricity. Light is faster and less distance sensitive. Fiber is more reliable, especially in storms. Another big advantage of fiber is its high bandwidth capabilities. It can carry much more data to and from your home than cable can, even during the busiest times of the day or night. For most service tiers, fiber service — not cable — provides upload speeds that match download speeds.

What speeds are available?

Frontier offers 2 speeds based upon your needs: 500/500 and Gig Service (940/880)*. The first number is the download speed, the second is the upload speed. For most service tiers, fiber upload speeds that match download speeds.

What about upload and download speeds?

Frontier FiberOptic Internet for 500/500 can provide upload speeds that match download speeds. Matching upload speeds can make a big difference in working from home and home schooling as well as streaming and gaming.
